Sharing Food Protocols

Sharing Food at Arahoe

At Arahoe School drink or food treats/prizes may not be given out to children or classes. However, from time to time, classes may create and/or consume drink or food items as part of their learning programmes. When this occurs, parents will be informed of what children will be making and consuming. Your child's teacher will inform you well in advance of any planned shared lunch occasions. We understand that parents provide the food for their child, that they would like them to consume while they are at school.

Week 2

Diwali Celebrations

This week we learnt all about Diwali and how it is celebrated in Indian families. We learnt that it is called'The Festival of Light' and that it celebrates the beginning of a New Year. Families come together and share food, dance, stories and fireworks. Candles are lit every night in special clay pots called divas and beautiful Rangoli patterns are created as a welcome to visitors, with special coloured powder. Here is one created by one of our families.

On Thursday we were very lucky to have all our Indian parents come and share with us their culture by bringing in Indian sweets, divas, and also some Henna to put Mendhi on all the children's hands. The children were so excited and they all loved having Mendhi on their hands.
Here are some pictures to show some of the beautiful designs the Mums created, the food, the beautiful clothes, and how the children had to wait patiently for the Mendhi to dry on their hands. They were all very patient.

Our Awesome T- shirts.

Thanks to Maya's dad for an awesome job printing the t-shirts with the children. They look amazing. We are working on our jingle at the moment, so if your children are singing Road Safety is awesome at home, that's what it will be. There will be a special assembly in Week 10 for parents to come to where you can come and view the t-shirts and listen to our awesome Jingle. Will e-mail you with the details soon.

Welcome to Term 3

Hi Everyone,

I'm very excited to embark on Term 3 on my own in Room 22. We sadly say goodbye to Mrs Simon, who has returned to the Reception block to teach the new children arriving in the block.
We are, however, going to have a farewell party for Mrs Simon this Friday - 1st August.
It would be fantastic if you could bring a plate to share for a shared lunch and we would also love for you to join us in thanking Mrs Simon for her fantastic work over the last two terms.

This term we are studying Road Safety and encouraging children to be aware of all hazards that can effect them on the way to school, arriving at school and leaving school. Over the coming weeks look out for Road Safety homework sheets and take the opportunity to discuss these with your children.

Here are a couple of photos of the children at two of the entrance points into Arahoe School.

Arbor Day

Last Thursday we had a fabulous morning planting trees on the bank by the field. It was a bit wet, but that did not stop the enthusiasm and vigour with which we went about digging, looking for worms, running to find that special spot for our trees, and getting our hands dirty!!
Here are some pictures of our day.

Rainy season

Parents the rainy season is upon us!

This picture perfectly sums up what happens when it starts raining. The kids get soaked if they don't get inside quickly enough, especially if they're on the field or the top playground. So please if you could include a spare change of warm clothes in a named plastic bag, it can live in the bottom of their bag or in the hook in the classroom.

Thanks so much to the parents who have already done this!

Worm Farm Extraordinaires!

A big thank you to all the parents who have helped create a worm farm at home as part of our Topic plan. So far we have heard back from the Fletcher family who purchased a worm farm for their home and the Fox family who made their own. Caleb was kind enough to bring it into the classroom today and wow doesn't it look amazing!! He used an old coke bottle, sand, soil, and rocks. His dad braved the rain late last night to collect the worms from the family's compost bin.
We were able to create some awesome stories this afternoon using Caleb's worm farm as inspiration.
